The short documentary The Wind in Beijing was presented alongside the exhibition Uncertain Blue. It pays homage to director Anqi Ju's experimental documentary There is a Strong Wind in Beijing (2000). In that film, Ju used a simple question - "Do you think the wind in Beijing is strong?" - to randomly interview people on the city's streets in 2000, a time of rapid development marked by massive demolition and construction, as Beijing hurried to build more high-rise buildings while many local residents were still reluctant to leave their homes.
Twenty-five years later, on a windy day, I entered an urban village in Beijing - largely rented by migrant workers and now facing demolition - with the same question. The responses were varied, reflecting both changes in the city and the feelings of its people.
